Jawaharlal Nehru, was born on November 14, 1889, was a prominent Indian freedom fighter and the first Prime Minister of independent India, serving from 1947 to 1964. He played a crucial role in shaping India's modern identity and its role in the world.
The birthplace of Jawahar Lal Nehru is Allahabad which is renamed as Prayagraj. Being a Kashmiri Pandit, he was also known as Pandit Nehru, while the Indian kids referred to them as Chacha Nehru (Chachaji). Every year, Jawahar Lal Nehru’s birthday is widely celebrated as Children’s day. His father’s name is Motilal Nehru who served as Indian Prime minister in 1919 and 1928 and his mother’s name is Swarup Rani. Jawahar Lal Nehru was the eldest of three siblings and had 2 sisters Vijaya Laxmi Pandit and Krishna Hutheesing was a noted writer and authored several books on her brother. Jawahar Lal Nehru was married to Kamala Nehru. They were blessed with a daughter, Indira Gandhi who became Prime Minister in the year 1966.
Jawaharlal Nehru served as Prime Minister of India for 18 long years, first as temporary prime minister, and then as prime minister of the Republic of India from 1950 to 1964. After the year 1962, Nehru's health started to decline slowly, and till 1963, he spent months recovering in Kashmir. On May 26th, 1964 after returning from Dehradun, Nehru complained of back pain. He talked to the doctors who were attending him for a short time, and collapsed almost immediately. On 27th May 1964 doctor’s declared him dead and the cause of death is suspected to be a heart attack. The body of Jawaharlal Nehru was put for public viewing on the Indian national Tri-colour flag. Nehru was cremated on 28 May at Shantivan on the banks of the Yamuna by Hindu rituals, witnessed by 1.5 million mourners flocking to the streets of Delhi and the cremation grounds.
